Packers and Bears Perfect Practical Drafts (Or guesses as to likely players there, whichever)

Hello Draft Compass Fans! I have gone through a series of mock draft simulations using a few different engines picking for both the Packers and the Bears. In both cases, no trades were allowed which is very unlikely in both cases. A further explanation of which ones used is at the bottom. If I managed to get the same guy with the same picks across simulators, then I considered that a higher probability that they would be there or if it was a player that could possibly jump a round between draft engines. From those picks I tried to create a perfect draft with higher probability players then included all players picked among the draft engines underneath.

Packers

1 (25) – Cooper DeJean DB Iowa – This is an ideal to me and he was picked in three out of the four draft engines (though he was available in all four at one point). PFF definitely ranks him higher so he was only there for the public rankings. DeJean is a versatile playmaker and could play CB or either safety spot. Hafley has the look of a creative defensive coordinator and DeJean can go with matchups on a week to week basis moving between safety and nickel. Throw out the thoughts from others saying he is a jack of all trades and master of none; he is a playmaker anywhere he plays. Back-up plan is clearly McKinstry.

NDB 2 – Cooper DeJean DB Iowa

2 (41) – Edgerrin Cooper LB Texas A&M – Remember that last year the Packers first two picks were a Luke and a Luke so why not a Cooper and a Cooper? In all seriousness though, Cooper is somewhat similar to Quay Walker when Walker was coming out of Georgia as a very athletic linebacker with an edge. Cooper is probably a tick below athletically but is more experienced. With the shift to a four man front the Packers need a linebacker and Cooper is high on my list for both athletics and coverage.

NDB 1 – Jordan Morgan OT Arizona

NDB 2 – Edgerrin Cooper LB Texas A&M

2 (58) – Jaden Hicks S Washington State – With Edgerrin Cooper showing up often but already taken and Hicks showing up as available here and later in some of the draft engines, I am bumping him up a round. He can be the true box safety when they need one or if DeJean is deployed in another spot. Hicks is very similar to a lot of recent Washington State S/LB hybrids but I think he is more Safety than Bucannon and Henley.

3 (88) – Blake Corum RB Michigan – Looking at the probabilities here Corum comes up twice across engines. There are a few RBs I like in this draft but Corum is my favorite for the Packers. Quick and very powerful for his size Corum will fit nicely into the rotation to keep the tread on his tires. Maybe I am wanting to replace Aaron Jones a bit here but they need a one-cut guy and Corum was the little engine on Michigan.

NDB 1 –  Cedric Gray LB North Carolina

NDB 2 – Dominick Puni OL Kansas

3 (91) – Christian Mahogany G Boston College – Mahogany is available across two of the draft engines and we took Hicks already. If Mahogany didn’t still show signs of recovering from his injury, I think he goes higher than this. I think he is far enough away that we will see the brute from a few years back. Packers need IOL and other needs have already been addressed.

NDB 1 –  Christian Mahogany G Boston College

NDB 2 – Ben Sinnott TE/Hback Kansas State

4 (126) – Ben Sinnott TE/HBack Kansas – It is pretty obvious that I am a big fan of Sinnott, he is available across two of the draft engines, and the Packers need to find the player that they thought Josiah Deguara would be. He is not dynamic in one area in particular but is a good mix of what you need in an HBack.

MDD 2 - Tanner Bortolini C/G Wisconsin

NDB 1 –  Josh Newton CB TCU

NDB 2 – Josh Newton CB TCU

5 (169) – Tanner Bortolini C Wisconsin – Bortolini and Tip Reiman were picked in two of the draft engines but with the pick of Sinnott already, that eliminates the need for Reiman. Josh Meyers has been so-so as the Center for the Packers. At that he does not really have a true back-up on the team. Furthermore, Bortolini is simply one of my favorite players in this draft. Packers nab him here, he battles for the Center or Guard spot this season and then takes over at Center next year.

MDD 2 - Tip Reiman TE/Hback Illinois

NDB 1 – Tanner Bortolini C/G Wisconsin

NDB 2 – Tyrone Tracy Jr. HB Purdue

6 (202) – Josh Proctor S Ohio State – With no commonalities among draft engines here, it is a matter of taking a guy that comes up in one of them that will be useful to the Packers. Proctor is also suffering from the “good at everything but not a star anywhere syndrome” which is fine. He is assignment sure, a team player, and will add emergency starter abilities along with special teams.

PFF 1 - Frank Gore Jr. HB Southern Miss

PFF 2 – Tanner Bortolini C/G Wisconsin

PFF (Public Rankings) – Frank Gore Jr. HB Southern Miss

PFN 1 – Tip Reiman TE/Hback Illinois

PFN 2 – Joshua Karty K Stanford

MDD 1 – Marist Liufau LB Notre Dame

MDD 2 – Curtis Jacobs LB Penn State

NDB 1 – Josh Proctor S Ohio State

NDB 2 – Julian Pearl OT Illinois

6 (219) – Jordan Magee LB Temple – Again, there is a lack of commonalities among the engines but Magee is one that came up after this pick. This is a tough call here because Magee as of late has been rising a little. Still, if he is here, I think he is a steal. I know that caliber of competition is a part of this but he looks pretty dynamite to me and his stats reflect that as well.

PFN 2 – Frank Crum OT Wyoming

MDD 1 – Joshua Karty K Stanford

MDD 2 - Braiden McGregor Edge Michigan

NDB 1 – Nathaniel Watson LB Mississippi State

NDB 2 – Jordan Magee LB Temple

7 (245) – Willie Roberts CB Lousiana Tech – Roberts is littered between 6th and 7th round in the simulations so this feels like he should be available here. If it is one thing I have learned over the years of following the draft it is that you should not ignore Louisiana Tech CBs that have played well. In addition, I do really like Roberts and how he plays the game. Should be an excellent depth piece that can develop.

NDB 1 – Willie Roberts CB Louisiana Tech

NDB 2 – Willie Roberts CB Louisiana Tech

7 (255) – JJ Weaver Edge Kentucky – Again, no commonalities among engine at this late of a pick. Weaver has often been available at this pick. He had a down year last year, I get it, but he has also demonstrated a lot of pass-rush ability in the past. Packers could use a rotational pass-rusher to complement some of the more run stopping DE/DT hybrids on the roster.

Bears

1 (1) – Caleb Williams QB USC – Let’s face it, we know this is the pick. Do I think Williams is a sure-fire pick, not at all. There are too many oddities to his game and mentality. That said, the tools are all there and the bears need to take their shot. I would support a trade down with the Commanders if it was offered and they were willing to part with their first this year and next year along with their 2nd this year and maybe some other change in there.

1 (9) – Joe Alt OT Notre Dame – I was surprised that three engines supported the scenario where Alt was available. While not the Bear’s greatest need getting an elite LT is not something that should ever be passed up if you lack one. That is not to say that the Bear’s OTs are bad at all, they are pretty good. But they can bump Jones inside to Guard and really strengthen the line. However, I would make a strong case for Odunze if he happens to be there but he has been on the rise with Nabers falling a little.

MDD 2 – Marvin Harrison Jr. Ohio State

NDB 1 – Rome Odunze WR Washington

NDB 2 – Joe Alt OT Notre Dame

3 (75) – Devontez Walker WR North Carolina – Walker is the only one that pops up between draft engines and is a position of eventual need. There is risk with Walker as he is not a complete player yet. However, there is little pressure on him to perform right away and he has two really great mentors in front of him while he develops and contributes. I will say that I think the Bears skipping over WR and nabbing either Kneeland or Isaac would also be a great pick here.

PFF 1 – Malachi Corley WR Western Kentucky

PFF 2 - Devontez Walker WR North Carolina

MDD 1 – Adisa Isaac Edge Penn State

MDD 2 – Marshawn Kneeland Edge Western Michigan

NDB 1 – Jonah Elliss Edge Utah

NDB 2 – Xavier Legette WR South Carolina

4 (122) – Javon Solomon Edge Troy – This was a really tough one since they have addressed QB, OL, and WR already. The Bears really need some pass-rush so Solomon makes sense here and he has tools to work with. He definitely needs to work on adding in a few more moves to his arsenal and not get stuck to an offensive lineman as easily as he does. Those are things that can be coached.  His raw talent is why he performed so well against lesser competition so honing those skills will be key.

PFF 1 – Cooper Beebe G Kansas State

Method:

Pff Mock Draft Engine (PFF) – Two Drafts – Both with a mix of pff rankings and public rankings, middle of the road for care for positional value, middle of the road for draft for needs, slight level of randomness. I also did one draft with the public rankings.

Pro Football Network (PFN) Draft engine 2 rounds each

Mock Draft Database (MDD) – I did two mock drafts. Honestly though, we could probably throw these out. They consistently had strange players falling. Bears had shots at Joe Alt in both simulations at pick 9 and Marvin Harrison Jr. available in pick 9 (who I obviously took). Then in both simulations Taliese Fuaga was available for the Packers at pick 25 which is highly unlikely, though I took him both times. That said, after round 1 they evened out a little.

NFL Draft Buzz (NDB) – I ran a draft with their rankings and a draft with the consensus rankings for each team. I left the random level to 1. However, this draft engine did not have special teams players so that has to be taken into consideration.

That is a wrap for the Packers and Bears. Next up will be the André and Chris Mock Draft that will be held on Saturday.
